What do students learn from kindergarten to grade 12?
The provincial government is developing new (K to 12) curricula, or "programs of study," which define what students are expected to know, understand, and be able to do in each subject and grade. My Child's Learning: A Parent Resource outlines what a child learns and does in each grade level.
Alberta's New Curricula
New curricula are required so that students can graduate with the knowledge, skills, and competencies they need to help them in their futures.
The new provincial curricula focus on six subject areas:
- Language Arts (English, Français, French)
- Social Studies
- Wellness Education
The current curricula remain in effect until the new provincial curricula are approved by the Minister of Education. Dates and timelines for implementation have not yet been set.
Curricula Delivery at Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools offers educational programming in English and French Immersion. French Immersion programs (dual-track) are offered at K to 12 schools in Morinville, while single-track French Immersion programs are available for K to 9 students at schools in St. Albert. St. Albert Catholic High School offers a dual-track French Immersion program for grades 10-12.
Alternative delivery of curricula is also available. This includes distance learning, outreach programming (at St. Gabriel Education Centre (Grades 9-12)), home-based education, and Learning Centres in each high school.
